President William J. Clinton
Commencement Speaker
Carleton College
June 10, 2000
Stanton Airfield was selected as the site for Mr. Clinton’s arrival and departure by helicopter, traveling from Stanton to Northfield via motorcade. His arrival was preceded by advance personnel from the U.S. Marine Helicopter Squadron One, Secret Services, Communications Specialists, counter-sniper team, and others assigned to protect the life of the President of the United States of America.
Arrival at Stanton Airfield on Saturday morning included three Sikorsky CH-53E helicopters carrying press and staff, two Sikorsky VH-3 helicopters (Marine One carrying the President, and Marine Two for backup). Two State Patrol helicopters were in the air also. There were two limosines, many Secret Service vans, and even a team with a bomb-sniffing German Shepherd. The Minnesota State Patrol, Goodhue and Rice County Sheriffs’ Departments, Northfield Police and Fire Departments, and Randolph Fire Department cooperated in assuring the safety of the President.
To prepare for the arrival of these important guests, there was clean-up of the building and grounds, filling in potholes with gravel, removal of the swing-less playground equipment and major effort for several days. Josh Hellerud mowed, Bill Goetschel cleaned the shop, hangar and office areas, Vince mowed and cleaned aircraft, Kent mowed and supervised, Marilyn washed windows and everyone just kept finding more tasks, besides greeting and cooperating with all the personnel involved with the White House travel. Sharlet Johnson was hostess and collected names and information all along the way. Kudos to all for the exceptional effort and attitude.
